Do I Need Rental Car Insurance?
With so many people going to visit friends and family over the holidays, there will probably be long lines at rental car counters all over the country. Appropriately insuring a rental car can be tricky task for most people.
Regrettably, many consumers do not even think about rental car insurance until they get to the counter, and are asked by the representative if they want the coverage. This can result in a costly mistake by not getting the coverage, or be a waste of your money if you don’t need the coverage.
Before going to rent a car you need to call your insurance agent first to see if your current policy has enough coverage, or if you need to purchase coverage from the rental company.
In most cases, whatever coverage and deductibles you have on your own car will apply when renting. However, if you only have very basic or minimum coverage, you will need to get insurance from the rental company or risk a potential large liability if something unfortunate were to happen.
